A feature of Pirates is the 'constructible' element of the game; each game piece (except for terrain) is created by removing small polystyrene pieces from placeholder cards and assembling them. As the ship, fort or sea monster is damaged by enemies during the course of game play, pieces of it are removed to record how much damage it has sustained.

The player controls a pirate ship, shown to be crewed by three pirates in cutscenes. In gameplay, when the ship catches on fire the pirates jump overboard until the lifebar becomes empty. The game is sometimes referred to as a strategy game , [ 6 ] but it is primarily an adventure game .
The game is set in the 17th century in the Caribbean and unlike most pirate games, it is mostly historically accurate.
