Attached Resource Computer NETwork (ARCNET or ARCnet) is a communications protocol for local area networks. [1] ARCNET was the first widely available networking system for microcomputers and it became popular in the 1980s for office automation tasks.
A hub provides a point-to-multipoint (or simply multipoint) circuit in which all connected client nodes share the network bandwidth. A switch on the other hand provides a series of point-to-point circuits, via microsegmentation, which allows each client node to have a dedicated circuit and the added advantage of having full-duplex connections.
Developed in 1976, ARCNET (Attached Resource Computer NETwork) was the first widely available networking system for microcomputers. [1]Datapoint had pioneered microprocessors; the challenge ARCNET addressed was how to facilitate the efficient transmission of information between different machines. [6]
Other Datapoint inventions were ARCnet, invented in 1977, originally called ARC (Attached Resource Computer), which was an early token-passing local area network (LAN) protocol, and the PL/B high-level programming language, which was originally called Databus (from Datapoint business language) and ran under the Datashare multi-user interpreter.
This phase is optional. It allows the sides to authenticate each other before a connection is established. If successful, control goes to the network-layer protocol phase. Network-Layer Protocol Phase This phase is where each desired protocols' Network Control Protocols are invoked. For example, IPCP is used in establishing IP service over the ...
Data communication, including data transmission and data reception, is the transfer of data, transmitted and received over a point-to-point or point-to-multipoint communication channel.
Datapoint remained one generation ahead of Intel until the Intel 80286. Overseeing the development of ARCNET by lead ARCNET architect John Murphy, [9] an early local area network, Poor stayed with Datapoint until 1984, after they had lost their technical microchip lead to IBM and been bought out by corporate raiders.
