[2] The county was created by the legislature on April 7, 1870, during the Reconstruction Era. It was formed from portions of Lawrence, Pike, Franklin, Copiah, and Amite counties.
Elisha C. Barlow (October 9, 1888 - November 27, 1957) was an American lawyer and politician from Mississippi.He represented Lincoln County in the Mississippi Legislature, serving in the Senate from 1928 to 1932 and in the House from 1924 to 1928, and was a district attorney from 1940 to 1948 and 1952 to 1956.
The county is named after William Claiborne, the second governor of the Mississippi Territory. Claiborne County is included in the Vicksburg, MS Micropolitan Statistical Area as well as the Jackson-Vicksburg-Brookhaven, MS Combined Statistical Area. It is bordered by the Mississippi River on the west and the Big Black River on the north.
The original owner was R. T. Scherck, who started his career by working for his father, an immigrant from Germany, at A. Scherck & Son. [4] Scherck lived at the R.T. Scherck House. He named the hotel for his daughter, Inez Lenore Pass Scherck. [3] The building was acquired by David Gilly in the early 1910s, followed by D.A. Biglane in 1945. [5]
