Woman with a Hat (French: La femme au chapeau) is an oil-on-canvas painting by Henri Matisse. It depicts Matisse's wife, Amélie Matisse. [1] It was painted in 1905 and exhibited at the Salon d'Automne during the autumn of the same year, along with works by André Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck and several other artists later known as "Fauves".
In Woman in Hat and Fur Collar, the artist shows her facial profile and frontal view in the same painting. She is looking to viewers both left and right. In his work, woman is the vehicle for the expression of intense emotion, but the feelings expressed are those of humanity at large: far from being the other, she is the self. [3]
The painting was sold by M. Knoedler & Co., New York and London, in November 1925 to Andrew W. Mellon for $290,000, who deeded it on March 30, 1932 to The A.W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust in Pittsburgh (a holding-place for Mellon's pictures while the National Gallery of Art was being established). The trust gave it to the NGA in 1937.

Girl with a Red Hat is slightly larger, 23×18 cm (9×7 inch). The painting is a close-up portrait of a girl, facing front, wearing a widely conical striped hat and a blue-green fur-trimmed jacket, holding a double recorder. The background is a tapestry similar to that in Girl with a Red Hat.
The painting is now in the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere museum in the Belvedere palace, Vienna, and is widely considered a masterpiece of the early modern period. It is a symbol of Vienna Jugendstil—Viennese Art Nouveau—and is considered Klimt's most popular work. [10] 19: 1907–1908 – Danaë (oil on canvas, 77 cm x 83 cm)
