Mount Airy / ˈ m aʊ n t ər i / [4] is a city within Surry County, in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 United States census, the city's population was 10,676, an increase of 288 (+2.8%) from the 2010 census count of 10,388. [5] As of 2020, the city is the most populous municipality in Surry County.

In 1953, US 52 was placed onto new western bypass of Mount Airy, its old route through became US 52A (today US 52 Business). In either 1956 or 1957, US 52 was placed on its current route through Wadesboro , via US 74 ; also around same time period, US 52 was removed from Old Fancy Gap Road near the Virginia state line.
Between 1929 and 1930, NC 89 was extended west to the Virginia state line. The highway was routed west of Mount Airy through Low Gap before ending at Virginia State Route 117 (SR 117) at the state line which continued toward Galax. [6] [7] On May 31, 1962, NC 89 was placed onto split streets in Mount Airy.
