As a Sloan Fellow she attended the London Business School and earned an executive MBA. In 1986, she became the second black woman to receive a doctorate in applied mathematics from Harvard University. [5] In 1986 she became the first black woman to teach applied mathematics at the MIT Sloan School of Management.

The Sloan Research Fellowship is awarded annually by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to "provide support and recognition to early-career scientists and scholars". Beginning in 1955, Fellowships were initially awarded in physics, chemistry, and mathematics.
