Founded in 1981 by Bill Kimpton and led by Chief Executive Officer Mike DeFrino, the group was the largest chain of boutique hotels in the United States in 2011. As of January 2024, it operates 81 hotels worldwide with a number of new properties forthcoming. [2]
Hotel Charlotte was imploded on November 6, 1988. [6] David Copperfield used the implosion as the setting for his escape in the TV special The Explosive Encounter. [7] A restaurant of the same name was created in its honor and reused many interior pieces from the original hotel. The restaurant ceased operations on January 29, 2011. [8]
Philadelphia-based PMC Property Group, which renovates historic buildings, and San Francisco-based Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants Group bought the Reynolds Building for $7.8 million. Plans call for "a boutique hotel, restaurant and upscale apartments." [16] In August 2014, the Reynolds Building was named to the National Register of Historic Places.
The company has several hotels planned for North Carolina, including in downtown Raleigh, Charlotte, and Research Triangle Park. According to the town, plans for the hotel are under review.
210 Trade began construction in 2007 on a planned residential tower atop the Queen City Quarter mixed used development. Once completed, 210 Trade would have had 52 floors and became the tallest residential building in Charlotte, surpassing The Vue, as well as the second-tallest building in Charlotte by total floor count, after the Bank of America Corporate Center.
