The General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon is an American single-engine supersonic multirole fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force (USAF). Designed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multirole aircraft with over 4,600 built since 1976. [4]
The modified F-16 demonstrated a maximum speed of Mach 2.0 (Mach 2.0 is the F-16's clean certified maximum speed) and handling characteristics similar to a normal F-16. Subsonic specific excess power was slightly improved. The trade studies involved additional CFD, testing, and weight and cost analyses.
Joining the F-16 Viper team this weekend will be the New Hampshire Air National Guard’s KC-46A tankers, the Vermont Air National Guard F-15 Eagle, the KC-135 Demo Team from Fairchild Air Force ...
The F-16XL-2 also received a larger inlet which would go on to be included in later F-16 variants. [ 20 ] These changes resulted in a 25% improvement in lift-to-drag ratio in supersonic flight [ 21 ] while remaining comparable in subsonic flight, [ 22 ] and a plane that reportedly handled smoothly at high speeds and low altitudes. The first F-16 AM was delivered in June 2003, and the FAP personnel performed the modification of the remaining 18 aircraft. Currently the Portuguese F-16 fleet uses the AN/ALQ-131 ECM pods, that had originally been bought for the A-7P Corsair IIs, and the new Rafael LITENING II targeting pods. One aircraft has been preserved for public display ...
The first engine was flown in 1989 and produced thrust of 17,800 lbf (79.2 kN) (dry/intermediate thrust) and 29,160 lbf (129.7 kN) with augmentation. The -229 powers late model F-16C/D Block 52s, F-16V Block 72s and F-15Es. Visually, the -229 can be distinguished from the -100/200/220 by its black composite external nozzle flaps, or "turkey ...
The squadron converted to General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter operations, completing the transition in October 1992. [23] With the Viper, the 706th participated in United Nations patrols to enforce a no-fly zone over Bosnia in March and April 1995 [1] and over Iraq in Operation Northern Watch and Operation Southern Watch.
