Federal elections were held in Germany on 31 July 1932, following the premature dissolution of the Reichstag. [1] The Nazi Party made significant gains and became the largest party in the Reichstag for the first time, although they failed to win a majority.
Therefore, the 1932 election was the last presidential election in Germany until 1949 (by which point the country was divided into West Germany and East Germany). It remains, until today, the last direct election of the German President. All presidential elections after World War II have been indirect.
