The Tyrrhenian Sea portion of the Mediterranean Sea is directly to the east of Sardinia between the Sardinian east coast and the west coast of the Italian mainland peninsula. The Strait of Bonifacio is directly north of Sardinia and separates Sardinia from the French island of Corsica. The coast of Sardinia is 1,849 km (1,149 mi) long.
Between 40 and 38 BC, Sextus Pompey, son of Pompey, and his legate Menas occupied Corsica and terrorised Sardinia, Sicily and even the Italian peninsula with a great pirate fleet. Along with the three Triumvirs , Sextus Pompey was one of the four most significant contenders in the warfare after Julius Caesar's death.

The island is French territory, though it belonged to Italy in the past. [3] Cavallo Island is about 120 hectares in area and its highest point is 32 metres above sea level. [4]
