This is an overview of festivals and observances found in the Okinawa Islands, Okinawa Prefecture of southwestern Japan. The Okinawan culture is noted for extreme diversity. The following list is based on south-central Okinawa, and may not be applied to northern Okinawa. Miyako and Yaeyama hold substantially different festivals and observances.
Okinawa Island (Japanese: 沖縄島, Hepburn: Okinawa-jima, Okinawan: 沖縄/うちなー, romanized: Uchinaa, [4] Kunigami: ふちなー, romanized: Fuchináa), officially Okinawa Main Island (沖縄本島, Okinawa-hontō), [5] is the largest of the Okinawa Islands and the Ryukyu (Nansei) Islands of Japan in the Kyushu region.
When Okinawa was governed by the United States, Yoronjima was the southernmost island Japanese mainlanders could go to for vacation, and it became a tourist spot. Tourism is still a large part of the local economy, with numerous resorts offering water sports and other activities.
