The Cathedral of Rum in Cataño, Puerto Rico is the world's largest rum distillery. [1] The Bacardi Distillery is located on 55 hectares (137 acres) and consists of forty-four buildings and structures, twenty-four of which contribute to its historical character. [2] It can be accessed from and is located at the intersection of PR-165 and PR-888.
In 2014 it was announced that CC1 Industries Inc. would be constructing a new rum distillery Club Caribe Distillers in Cidra, Puerto Rico. This was the location of a pharmaceutical plant owned by GlaxoSmithKline which had closed. The new distillery however included a hospitality center and function hall contributing to local tourism.
Destileria Limtuaco hosts its own museum which opened on February 6, 2018. Hernando de Cataño was chosen to offer his medical services in Puerto Rico during Francisco Bahamonde de Lugo's tenure as Governor of Puerto Rico (1564–1568). He was one of the first physicians who arrived in Puerto Rico during its colonization [2] and, upon accepting his position, received as payment a piece of land across the San Juan islet.
The distillery was once also home to Puerto Rico's largest sugar-factory called Central Mercedita, producers of the Snow White sugar brand. The building, known as Castillo Serrallés, was designed by Pedro Adolfo de Castro in 1930 in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. [7] The museum sits on a 2.5-acre lot and opened on 20 February 1991.
