Matiur Rahman (Bengali: মতিউর রহমান; born 15 April, 1946) [1] is the editor of Prothom Alo, one of the largest circulated Bengali language daily in Bangladesh. He is the recipient of the 2005 Ramon Magsaysay Award in the journalism, literature and creative communication arts category. [2] [3] [4]
Prothom Alo is often criticized for its liberal attitude. A cartoon by Arifur Rahman was published in Alpin about a joke partly related to religion, causing protests against the Newspaper. In a statement released by Prothom Alo, editor Matiur Rahman apologised, expressing regret for publishing the cartoon. [6] [1] He stated that the "unedited, unapproved and unacceptable" cartoon is being withdrawn and would be "taking actions against the persons responsible".
