A carrier strike group (CSG) is a type of carrier battle group of the United States Navy. [1] It is an operational formation composed of roughly 7,500 personnel, usually an aircraft carrier , at least one cruiser , a destroyer squadron of at least two destroyers or frigates , [ 2 ] and a carrier air wing of 65 to 70 aircraft.
The unit was constituted into the Regular Army on 18 January 1966 as the 43rd General Support Group. [2] The unit was activated on 26 March 1966 at Fort Carson, Colorado and organized on 16 May 1966. The first battalion to join the Group was the 68th Transportation Battalion which was activated in August 1966.
Once the CSG deploys and crosses over the inter-UCC boundary in the mid-Atlantic, it then reports (is "chopped") to the Sixth Fleet (responsible for European waters and the Mediterranean Sea). Once the CSG enters the Suez Canal , it "chops" to the Fifth Fleet for operational control.
