The "Pat Blues" were created in 1970 when the Regina Pats transferred from the SJHL to the Western Hockey League to maintain their Memorial Cup eligibility. The Blues were the Junior "A" affiliate team for the Major Junior parent club Regina Pats and played their home games at Regina Exhibition Stadium (1970–77) and Regina Agridome (1977–82, now called the Brandt Centre).
The team was originally named the Regina Patricia Hockey Club, after Princess Patricia of Connaught, the granddaughter of Queen Victoria and daughter of the Governor General, the Duke of Connaught. The University of Regina won their first, and only, conference title in 2000–01. In 2004, the Saskatchewan Prairie Ice began play in the minor-pro Western Women's Hockey League based out of Lumsden located near Regina. After three losing seasons the team folded in 2007 due to financial reasons.

The Notre Dame Hounds were founded by Athol Murray out of the College of Notre Dame, which was renamed after Murray in 1981. [1] Murray moved to Regina from Toronto in 1922, where he had earlier established the Argos sports club, and he brought many students with him to Saskatchewan and founded the Regina Argos program.
