Johnson was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and moved with her family to Fairhope, Alabama, in 1902. In 1907, she founded a progressive school called the School of Organic Education (now the Marietta Johnson School of Organic Education). [1]

George Sylvester Counts (December 9, 1889 – November 10, 1974) was an American educator and influential education theorist.. An early proponent of the progressive education movement of John Dewey, Counts became its leading critic affiliated with the school of Social reconstructionism in education.
There he learned of the educational theories of German educator Friedrich Wilhelm August Fröbel (1782-1852), kindergarten founder and learning-through-play advocate. He again studied at Johns Hopkins University , summer 1895, then taught seventh grade and was principal at Anderson Elementary School, Savannah, GA, 1896–97.
In 1921 Bode became professor of education at Ohio State University. There Bode wrote on philosophy of education and authored Fundamentals of Education (1921), Modern Educational Theories (1927), Conflicting Psychologies of Learning (1929), Democracy as a Way of Life (1937), Progressive Education at the Crossroads (1938), and How We Learn (1940).
