Re: Stiller vs. Defiance Actions I have a Skunkworks(Defiance action) custom and love the action. If I were buying just an action then maybe the Stiller would be an option as the cost is just a little less especially during group buys. But when your approaching the $1k mark for an action the waters get muddied in a hurry.
A forum thread where users discuss and compare different types of rifle actions for sniper builds. Some users recommend Defiance actions for their smoothness and robustness, while others prefer Stiller, Surgeon, or Bighorn actions for their features and quality.
Defiances response: " A couple things... First, our newer actions including our Ruckus now come with a little more clearance. The newer actions also have a straight bolt handle design. Second, shops go with our actions because we offer more customizable options than just about any other action...
Because Defiance only make actions up to a Lapua bolt face. For ELR work, this is limits you to the .338 LM/Norma cartridges, or single feeding Tubb's XC cartridges. Some will also argue that on bigger cartridges, the Defiance actions will show pressure earlier than others due to the size of the action/tennon and size of the bolt lugs.
The machining of the Defiance is sublime, so smooth. The Zeus was very rough in comparison when just sliding bolt back n forth in action (not referring bolt lift here). Zeus has been cycled a few thou times now and way better than when new. Ask some guys at your range to try cycling their actions. See if you like the 60deg or 90deg throw.
Defiance. high tolerance. smaller clearance. ruckes/tenacity take prefits. well machined actions. hence the reputation for being crap in moon dust environments Zermatt. high tolerance. more clearance. machined extremely well. but have some 'slop' if you don't know how to run them in a smooth fashion. these clearances allow them to run in worse ...
I REALLY like the Defiance actions, I think they are a bit nicer than the Seekins action, just a little. I've read ad nauseum on both and it seems to come down to personal preference. My problem would be logistics. I can buy the Seekins rifle cash and carry, the Defiance action would be shipping and a transfer fee.
Wow man the price increases on Defiance actions are over 27% for next year. If new ownership was intending to tank sales this would be a great way to do it. Yeah yeah, material cost increase, labor cost increases. Going to be a hard sale for Tenacitys to go for $1595, Ruckus for $1695 and Deviants for $1795.
Defiance was definitely on the tight clearance side of the house, but most, if not all of their new actions come machined with more clearance in the bolt to receiver interface to allow for this. You used to have to request it, which is where the reputation comes from.
The Impact's were ordered from Stuteville Precision, and the barrels were pre-fit from WAR rifles. The Defiance was set up by SAC. Both actions were used heavily in PRS with several barrels in several calibers. I also have a lot of experience with Surgeon actions, I used Surgeon for a few years in-between Defiance and Impact.
