Brand was the eldest son of soldier and courtier Thomas Brand, 3rd Viscount Hampden, and of his wife Lady Katharine Mary Montagu-Douglas-Scott, a daughter of the 6th Duke of Buccleuch, and was born 30 March 1900 at the home of his maternal grandfather, Montagu House in London. [1]

Born Thomas Brand, Dacre was the eldest son of General Henry Trevor, 21st Baron Dacre, and Pyne, daughter of the Very Reverend Maurice Crosbie, Dean of Limerick. Henry Brand, 1st Viscount Hampden, Speaker of the House of Commons, was his younger brother. In 1824 he assumed by Royal licence the surname of Trevor in lieu of his patronymic.
