In 1856, an act creating the county specified that Tucker's county court was to be held on the lands of Enoch Minear, descendant of Jonathan Minear. Founded as the Wheeling Intelligencer in August 1852 by Eli B. Swearingen and Oliver Taylor, The Intelligencer is the oldest continuously published daily newspaper in the state of West Virginia. The paper was initially established as a means to promote Winfield Scott and the Whig Party in the 1852 United States presidential election .

The first issue of the St. George Standard and Balonne Advertiser appeared on 10 July 1878. A fire destroyed the office and printery on 2 September 1905 and it was replaced by the Balonne Beacon, whose first issue was published on 4 October 1905. The Balonne Beacon also absorbed the Maranoa News on 7 July 1955.
