  2. Why Are 1 Oz Copper Bars So Expensive? - Coin Community Forum

    www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=118662

16 ounces equal a pound and as of this writing copper is trading at $3.68 per pound. Technically an ounce of copper should be 23 cents. I have been searching Ebay and other sites for a one ounce bar of copper, but the lowest price I can find is $2.00. If each ounce of copper was worth 2 dollars, then each pound of copper should be $32.

As you probably know, the double eagle was made to contain $20 worth of gold. The "spot price" at the time was $20.67 per troy ounce which meant the coin contained 0.9675 ounces. After addition of 10% copper to produce the 90% gold alloy needed for US gold coinage the final weight was 33.436 grams or about 1.075 ounces.

  4. Where To Order Silver Coins From. ASE, Maples, Etc

I prefer 10 ounce bars since they are affordable and carry the second lowest premiums compared to all other forms. With silver spot currently at $22.60, and a 10 ounce bar in the $253.00 range that is only a $27 premium or $2.70 per ounce over spot. Compare that to a silver eagle 1 ounce coin at $33. and change for a premium of $10 each over spot.

The price of each medal was determined at the time the telephone order was placed with the Mint (no repeat of the price manipulation seen in 1980/81); as described above, a premium was added to each medal to cover costs ...

You can easily cover 100 square feet with one ounce of gold. And when you're electroplating, one molecule at a time, the amount of gold needed to cover a coin is infinitesimal. It would require the most advanced of measuring equipment to weigh it. They probably only needed that one ounce of gold to plate the entire mintage.

  11. How Many Silver Coins Make Up An Ounce Of Pure Silver

    www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=72088

For sterling coins (pre 1947): about 71 pence per troy ounce. Three florins, or 6 shillings, or 12 zacs, or 24 treys, will all give you a shave over an ounce of silver. If you've got crowns, they're 60/71th of an ounce; a crown plus a shilling is a bit more than an ounce, or six crowns is roughly 5 ounces.
