David Ogden Stiers was a genuinely good actor. He took what could have been a one dimensional character and gave him warmth and humanity but only occasionally so Charles didn't become maudlin. My brother used to hate it when I said this, but the Winchester years were my favorite. He preferred Frank and Trapper John and Henry Blake.
It had such a "Love Boat" cast: Genie Francis, Inga Swenson, Kirstie Alley, Terri Garber, Morgan Fairchild, David Ogden Stiers, Robert Guillaume, etc ... hard to take that seriously. Rich Man, Poor Man and The Thorn Birds still goes down as the two best mini-series TV has ever offered.
Native Rhode Islander here. Yes, Newport is nice to visit in the warmer months. But keep in mind that the year-round population is only 25K.
[quote]David Ogden Stiers was gay. [quote]David Ogden Stiers was in a few Woody Allen movies. I remember him best from his appearance on an episode of Frasier. His character was the late Mrs. Crane’s research assistant, he’s so much like Frasier & Niles that Roz & Martin wonder if he’s their real father.
And, for me, it went downhill everytime they had a major character leave. The original cast was very funny. Mike Farrell didn't bring much to the table and David Ogden Stiers' character was annoying. Grank Burns, aka Larry Linville, was great. He should have got an Emmy for playing such an awful character so well.

[quote] "David Ogden Stiers. Actually very low maintenance and nothing like Niles." I don't know what one has to do with the other, R114. Anyway, R57 Stiers was Julliard-educated and mentored by John Houseman there (which I didn't know until I looked it up, but I find interesting).
We've also contacted the ghost of David Ogden Stiers and he's going to cover W.A.P. essentially, it's an empty vinyl catsuit humping the floor. But, the forehead sweat is 100% DOS. by Anonymous
