Sheds is a hamlet in the town of DeRuyter, Madison County, New York, United States. The community is located at the intersection of state routes 13 and 80 , 8.3 miles (13.4 km) south of Cazenovia .
In the 1980s an Amish community settled in the town. They make their living from farming, sawmilling, and furniture making. These families are among a number of Amish migrants to western New York in the late 20th century from Pennsylvania, particularly the Lancaster, Pennsylvania area, which is under urban sprawl pressure.
Barn raising as a method of providing construction labor had become rare by the close of the 19th century. By that time, most frontier communities already had barns and those that did not were constructing them using hired labor. Mennonite and Amish communities carried on the tradition, however, and continue to do so to this day. [2]
