Shoreham-by-Sea (often shortened to Shoreham) is a coastal town and port in the Adur district, in the county of West Sussex, England. In 2011 it had a population of 20,547. The town is bordered to its north by the South Downs, to its west by the Adur Valley, and to its south by the River Adur and Shoreham Beach on the English Channel.
In 1845 the Shoreham Harbour Commissioners decided to provide funds to open a lifeboat service for the town. The first lifeboat was the Ramonet (ON 212), a self-righting pulling vessel 30 feet (9.1 m) in length. [7] In 1865 the RNLI took over the lifeboat service for Shoreham, establishing a station with a boathouse on Kingston beach.
Shoreham Beach is a 26.2-hectare (65-acre) Local Nature Reserve in Shoreham-by-Sea in West Sussex. It is owned and managed by Adur District Council. Old Shoreham was a mostly agricultural village on the east bank of the River Adur. [1] Claims that it was founded near the place where Ælle of Sussex—the first King of the South Saxons—came ashore in 477 have been disproved, but it had become a successful village by the time of the Domesday survey in 1086, supporting a population of 76.
