South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University named after Kostiantyn Ushynskyi was established as Pedagogical Institute at Richelieu Lyceum in Odesa on 2 May 1817. [1] It is regarded one of the oldest & most influential pedagogical university of Ukraine.

The main building of Odesa National University. Odesa I. I. Mechnykov National University is one of the oldest in Ukraine. It was founded in 1865, when by edict of the Russian Tsar Alexander II the Richelieu Lyceum (Ukrainian: Рішельєвський ліцей, which had existed in Odesa since 1817) was reorganized into the Imperial Novorossiya (New Russia) University.

The medical faculty managed to survive the difficult and turbulent period of the early years of the Russian revolution and in 1922 it was transformed into the independent and autonomous Odesa State Medical Institute. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, it became Odesa State Medical University in an independent Ukrainian Republic.
