The area known as "Santeetlah" along the Cheoah River was sparsely settled, and in any case, the river valley was flooded after Santeetlah Dam was completed in 1928. Lake Santeetlah has 76 miles (122 km) of shore line and is home to a variety of trout, muskie, crappie, and bass. Of special note is the adjoining Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, which was set aside in 1936 as a memorial to poet-soldier Joyce Kilmer, and is an example of original, "old growth forest" in the eastern United States.

The Santeetlah Project, which began in 1925, was completed in 1928 by the Tallassee Power Company (now Tapoco). The Santeetlah Dam forms Lake Santeetlah, a reservoir which covers approximately 2,881 acres (1,166 ha), normal full pool area, with a drainage area of 176 square miles (460 km 2) and stretches to Robbinsville, North Carolina.
