Cornwallis was born in Culford, Suffolk, the son of Sir Frederick Cornwallis, 1st Baron Cornwallis and his wife Elizabeth Ashburnham, daughter of Sir John Ashburnham and Elizabeth Richardson, 1st Lady Cramond, and was baptised on 19 April 1632. His uncle was John Ashburnham. [1]
Lady Charlotte Cornwallis (d. 11 March 1794), married 8 April 1756 Bishop Spencer Madan and had issue. He died in June 1762, aged 62, and was succeeded by his eldest son, Charles, who became a prominent military commander and was created Marquess Cornwallis in 1792. Neville was the second son of Richard Griffin Neville, 3rd Baron Braybrooke (1783–1858), by his wife Lady Jane Cornwallis (1798–1856), daughter of the 2nd Marquess Cornwallis. His father was a maternal descendant of the Neville family. He was born in 1823, and was educated at Eton and Magdalene College, Cambridge. [2]
