Pope Pius XII erected the Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana on October 21, 1944, with territory of the Diocese of Fort Wayne. [5] The new diocese had 54 parishes and an approximate population of 31,700 Catholics. In 1945, the pope named Reverend John Bennett of Fort Wayne as the first bishop of the new diocese. [5]

Roman Catholic Diocese of Lafayette may refer to either of two different Roman Catholic dioceses in the United States: Roman Catholic Diocese of Lafayette in Louisiana; Roman Catholic Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana
On November 11, 1944, Bennett was appointed as the first bishop of the newly erected Diocese of Lafayette by Pope Pius XII. [2] He received his episcopal consecration on January 10, 1945, from Bishop John F. Noll, with Bishops Francis Cotton and John O'Hara, serving as co-consecrators. [2] John Bennett died on November 20, 1957, at age 66.
