The company started in 1923 as "Bell Auto Parts," named for its location in Bell, California. [2] [3] Roy Richter began working for Bell Auto Parts in 1933. In 1945, he purchased the store for $1,000. [2] Richter produced his first race car helmets in 1954. The "Bell Helmet Company" was established as a division of Bell Auto Parts in 1956. [2]
He began his career after graduating high school by going to work at Bell Auto Parts store in Bell, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. At that time he took an interest in auto racing in 1933. For a short time he was a professional auto racer, but came to realize his talents were more of building race cars and racing products than racing them.
Later models came with hydraulic clutches. These were commonly found in Pintos, some Mustang II/Capris, and Rangers but do not match the V6 Bell housings. Changing the engine to a V6 often requires changing the bellhousing (Mitsubishi) but the Mazda trans had an integral bell. 2.6, 2.8, 2.9, and 2.9 Cosworth. Most of these were RWD car engines.
Power comes from a 303 cu in (5.0 L) Oldsmobile V8 engine fitted with twin Ford carbs and a GMC 4-71 supercharger courtesy of Bell Auto Parts. [8] The engine was built by Fritz Voight. There is extensive use of chrome plating, including most of the exposed engine and all of the front suspension parts.
1975 Western Auto Garden Tiller. Western Auto was known for its private labelled Western Flyer Bicycle and Performance Radial GT tire brand. Other Western Auto private-labeled brands included Davis tires, Tough One batteries, TrueTone electronics, Citation appliances, Wizard tools, and Wizard typewriters — the latter as re-branded typewriters manufactured by Brother Industries of Nagoya, Japan.
