In the 2020–2021 academic year its student enrollment was 8,000, [1] making it the 22nd largest school district in the state. [2] The district operates an early childhood center, twelve elementary schools, three middle schools and two 9–12 high schools. The school's original name was North Canton High School which students referred to as "No. Ca. Hi." In 1957, a new high school building was named in dedication to local resident William Henry "Boss" Hoover, founder of The Hoover Company [ 2 ] [ 3 ] whose world headquarters was in the area at that time.

By 1943, it was one of four high schools, as enrollment in the city schools dictated Lehman High School, Lincoln High School, and Timken Vocational High School be opened.
