Ice hockey is a popular sport in the state of Wisconsin. Ninety high schools field sanctioned varsity teams competing in the Wisconsin Hockey Prep (WiHP) leagues of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA). Eight "club" non-sanctioned Wisconsin High School Hockey teams compete in the Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association.
Beloit Memorial supports the state's oldest high school newspaper, the monthly Increscent, founded in 1894. [citation needed] It won first place in General Excellence by the Wisconsin Newspaper Association in 2010 and second place in 2009 and 2011. [4] The Increscent publishes an annual humor issue, called the Uncrescent.
The conference added a seventh high school in 1929, a year after Racine High School split into William Horlick High School on the north side and Washington Park High School on the south side of the city. [3] Park took Racine's place in the conference when it was split in 1928, and Horlick joined the conference a year later. [4]
