Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) is a competition sanctioning body that maintains rules and record for Land Speed Racing events held at El Mirage Dry Lake, California and at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah. It is a non-profit, volunteer organization made up of eleven separate car clubs. [1]
Hudson first participated in Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1971 at the age of 20, racing a stock Kawasaki motorcycle.. After stepping away from racing for decades to focus on his career and family, Hudson returned to land speed racing at the age of 58 in 2009 with the purchase of a stock 2003 Suzuki GSX-R1000 on Craigslist, which he spent the next decade personally customizing.
Another was the "Project 200" streamliner designed by his business partner, Matt Guzzetta, and speed tested by Vesco at El Mirage Dry Lake. Project 200 both competed in the Craig Vetter Fuel Economy Challenge , and in 1983, performed an American coast-to-coast transit without refueling, sponsored by Motorcyclist magazine.

El Mirage Lake is a dry lake bed in the northwestern Victor Valley of the central Mojave Desert, within San Bernardino County, California. The lake is located about 9 miles (14 km) west-northwest of the town of Adelanto and 10 mi (16 km) north of Highway 18 in San Bernardino County .
1966: Banks modifies a 1953 Studebaker and drives it to class records at El Mirage Dry Lake and the Bonneville Salt Flats with a top speed of 184.52 mph, as certified by the Southern California Timing Association. 1970: First Banks-branded turbo marine racing engine is built.

On July 2, 2010, Blackbird set the world's first certified record for going directly downwind, faster than the wind, using only power from the available wind during its run on El Mirage Dry Lake. The yacht achieved a dead downwind speed of about 2.8 times the speed of the wind. [1] [18]
