Huntley was born in Cardwell, Montana, [1] the only son and eldest of four children born to Percy Adams Huntley and Blanche Wadine (née Tatham) Huntley. The family was of Scottish descent. [ 2 ] His father was a telegraph operator for the Northern Pacific Railway , and young Chet was born in the Cardwell depot living quarters.
David McClure Brinkley (July 10, 1920 – June 11, 2003) was an American newscaster for NBC and ABC in a career lasting from 1943 to 1997.. From 1956 through 1970, he co-anchored NBC's top-rated nightly news program, The Huntley–Brinkley Report, with Chet Huntley and thereafter appeared as co-anchor or commentator on its successor, NBC Nightly News, through the 1970s.
The program's ratings slipped late in the decade as CBS's Walter Cronkite gained fame for his coverage of the space program, a field in which neither Huntley nor Brinkley had much interest (although Huntley and Brinkley occasionally participated in space coverage, another NBC newsman, Frank McGee, was the prime anchor of NBC's space coverage).
Llewelyn was born in Maryland in 1938 and later moved to Lancaster, South Carolina with his family, and attended the University of South Carolina. [1] [2] He became an announcer at a South Carolina station while still in high school, and then moved to New York City, working as a page for Perry Como, and later moving to work for Chet Huntley in the news room.

The sign-off became famous (although both men disliked it). Ironically, David Brinkley used the phrase "Good night, Chet" when he eulogized Huntley after his passing.
