In 1939 it became The Finnish Art Academy School (fi: Suomen Taideakatemian koulu). In 1985 it became The Academy of Fine Arts. In the beginning of 1993 the status of the Academy was raised to university level . 3.5 years of full-time study leads to the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts, and completing the Master's degree takes two further years.

The Academy traces its history back to the Department of Arts founded at the Warsaw University in the Duchy of Warsaw in 1812. As a separate institution it was founded in 1844 in Congress Poland . In an upgrade in 1904 it was named the Warsaw School of Fine Arts; and in 1932 it received recognition as an Academy.
