Scott X. Mao is the John Swanson Endowed Professor at the Swanson School of Engineering of the University of Pittsburgh.He is a specialist in the research on plasticity, deformation physics and fracture mechanics of materials, and atomic scale experimental mechanics.
Swanson graduated with a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell University in 1962 and 1963, respectively. He went on to earn a PhD in applied mechanics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1966.

Michael L. Benedum Hall of Engineering is a landmark academic building on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. The building was designed in the brutalist style by the architectural firm of Deeter, Ritchey, and Sippel [ 1 ] and completed in 1971 at a cost of $15 million ($112.9 million today).
