James Andrews Beard (May 5, 1903 – January 21, 1985) [1] was an American chef, cookbook author, teacher and television personality. He pioneered television cooking shows, taught at The James Beard Cooking School in New York City and Seaside, Oregon, and lectured widely.
[8] [9] In addition to the chef, restaurant, and book awards, journalism awards were added in 1993, which expanded to broadcast media in 1994, and restaurant design awards were first given in 1995. [4] In 2018, the James Beard Foundation changed the award's rules to be more inclusive, to fight race and gender imbalances in the industry.
The awards recognize chefs, restaurateurs, authors and journalists each year, and are generally scheduled around James Beard's May birthday. [ 2 ] Annually since 1998, the foundation has awarded the designation of America's Classic for local independently-owned restaurants that reflect the character of the community.

Tamara Murphy (1961 – August 10, 2024) was an American chef who owned and ran the restaurant Terra Plata in Seattle. In 1994, Food & Wine [1] named her Best New Chef. In 1995, she won the James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef in the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii. Murphy suffered a stroke on August 7, 2024.
