Currently, the school offers only the professional practice Doctor of Pharmacy degree. This program is a four year course of study following a minimum prerequisite of two years of pre-pharmacy study. The program includes 3 years of study on the Edwardsville campus and one full year of "on-the-job" education at an area clinical site.
A year later, the Pharmacy Law of 1881 was passed, mandating education requirements for the practice of pharmacy in Illinois and assigning supervision of the professional to state agencies. Candidates were required to pass an examination given by the State Board of Health. The law also required pharmacists to pay a $2 annual licensing fee.
Within some colleges, the Pre-Pharmacy coursework is combined with the Pharm.D course for a 5 or 6-year program. Five year programs connect 2 years of Pre Pharmacy to an accelerated year round program. Six year programs deliver six tradition academic years which means summers are not used for the programs and are free of required classes.
