The Norwegian Elkhound is one of the Northern Spitz-type breeds of dog and is the National Dog of Norway. The Elkhound has served as a hunter , guardian , herder , and defender . It is known for its courage in tracking and hunting moose and other large game, such as bears or wolves .
It is a sibling breed to a Grey Norwegian Elkhound, but is smaller, more agile, doesn't bark and was bred explicitly for on-leash dog hunting. Historically, the Black Norwegian Elkhound has originated from local spitz dog population in the border areas between Norway and Sweden , and has existed as its own breed since the mid-19th century.

The Hällefors Elkhound is a medium-sized, rectangular Spitz with either a sickle or curly tail. Thick, harsh, and dense coat should always be yellow, ranging from fawn to reddish.
