Pithecellobium keyense is a shrub or small tree. It has pinnately compound leaves, with 2-4 leaflets. The leaves are evergreen and leathery in texture. Flowers are produced in heads, and range in color from white to pink.
Pithecellobium is a genus of flowering plants in the family Fabaceae. It includes approximately 23 species from the tropical Americas, ranging from Mexico to Peru and northern Brazil, including the Caribbean Islands and Florida.

Recently discovered populations in the Key West National Wildlife Refuge use the Florida Keys blackbead (Pithecellobium keyense) as the preferred host plant. Other plants reported as being used by Miami blues are peacock flower (Caesalpinia pulcherrima), snowberry (Symphoricarpos), and cat's-paw blackbead (Pithecellobium unguis-cati). [6]
