After nearly 90 years, renowned camellia grower Nuccio's Nurseries is closing, but there's still time to visit one of SoCal's last family-run specialty nurseries.
Vern McCaskill (January 1, 1902 – March 23, 1992) was a nurseryman active in southern California for much of the 20th century who specialised in breeding Camellia and Azalea cultivars. He was the father of the botanist and herbarium curator June McCaskill .
The legacy of camellia growers such as F.M. Uyematsu lives on at the gardens, but Southern California still has one other internationally famous nursery devoted to camellias and azaleas in Altadena.

McCaskill was born in Altadena, in California. [3] She grew up in Pasadena where her parents, Vern and Billie operated a nursery called McCaskill Gardens. [5]She attended Mills College in 1949, and graduated with a degree in botany in 1951.
