Sunbury Pop Festival or Sunbury Rock Festival was an annual Australian rock music festival held on a 620-acre (2.5 km 2) private farm between Sunbury and Diggers Rest, Victoria, which was staged on the Australia Day (26 January) long weekend from 1972 to 1975.
Mushroom Records was an Australian record label formed by Michael Gudinski and Ray Evans in Melbourne in 1972.. Its inaugural release was an ambitious triple live album of the 1973 Sunbury Pop Festival, and over the first few years of its existence Mushroom signed a number of important Australian acts including Madder Lake, Ayers Rock, and MacKenzie Theory.
In January 1973 Sid Rumpo performed at the second Sunbury Pop Festival, [3] with their track, "Sailing", appearing on Mushroom Records triple live album of the event, The Great Australian Rock Festival Sunbury 1973, in April. [1] [3] The track was co-written by Elliott, Herridge, Hughes, Searls and Wallace.
As their popularity increased, they were one of the first bands signed to the Gudinski co-owned Mushroom Records in late 1972. [1] [2] By 1973 they were a headlining act at the 1973 Sunbury Pop Festival and Mushroom Records' first release was their debut single, "Goodbye Lollipop", in February. [1]
In 1982, Mushroom Records celebrated its tenth anniversary by running the Mushroom Evolution Concert which was released as a triple live album and a related VHS. Gudinski sold 49% of his interests in Mushroom Records to rival Festival Records then owned by Rupert Murdoch 's News Corporation in 1993 for a reputed $22 million. [ 2 ]
