A "District of Seneca" was created judicially in 1789 at the time the county was established, but its extent and subdivisions are not clearly known. The town was finally organized in 1793. In 1872, the northeast part of the town was used to form the Town of Geneva , taking with it most of the historic Seneca communities and sites.
Seneca Falls is a hamlet and census-designated place in Seneca County, New York, United States. [4] The population was 6,681 at the 2010 census. [5] The 2020 census population of Seneca Falls CDP was 6,809. The hamlet is in the Town of Seneca Falls, east of Geneva. It was an incorporated village from 1831 to 2011.
The population was 5,171 at the 2010 census and is now the most populated village in Seneca County. The village is named after Waterloo, Belgium, where Napoleon was defeated. [citation needed] It is the primary county seat of Seneca County, with the other being Ovid as part of a two-shire system established in 1822.
The purchase of Seneca reservations at Caneadea, Big Tree, Squawky Hill, and Gardeau, along the Genesee river, together with parcels from the Buffalo Creek and Cattaraugus Reservations in 1826 by Thomas Ogden, Benjamin W. Rodgers, and Robert Troup incentivized further efforts to dispossess the Haudenosaunee nations.
