Barataria (/ ËŒ b ɛər É™ ˈ t ɛər i É™ / BAIR-É™-TAIR-ee-É™) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,057 in 2020. [ 2 ] It is part of the New Orleans – Metairie – Kenner metropolitan statistical area .
Barataria falls under the San Juan–Laventille Regional Corporation. It is a relatively quiet residential area, home to retired and "middle classes" with streets running north–south and east–west with corresponding names, e.g. "Fifth Street". There is the usual suburban mix of churches, shops, bars and auto repair shops.
The Chalmette site and the Barataria Preserve were both listed on the National Register of Historic Places October 15, 1966. [ 4 ] The Chalmette site was later incorporated into the multi-site Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve , which was authorized on November 10, 1978.
