Pope Francis in 2020 named Auxiliary Bishop Ronald Hicks of the Archdiocese of Chicago as the next bishop of the Diocese of Joliet in Illinois. As of 2023, Hicks is the current serving bishop of Joliet in Illinois. In 2024, the Diocese announced that five Catholic churches and two Catholic schools would close in the Joliet area.

On December 17, 1948, McNamara was appointed as the first bishop of the newly erected Diocese of Joliet in Illinois by Pope Pius XII. [3] He received his episcopal consecration on March 7, 1949, from Cardinal Samuel Stritch, with Bishops John Boylan and Albert Zuroweste serving as co-consecrators.
Joseph Imesch was born on June 21, 1931, in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, to Dionys and Margaret (née Margelisch) Imesch. [1] After attending St. Ambrose Parish school and St. Paul Elementary School in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, he entered Sacred Heart Seminary High School and College in Detroit.
