The Custom name returned for the 1957 model year along with a new Custom 300 series, [5] these two models sitting below the Fairlane and Fairlane 500. [6] The base Custom was the bottom-rung model, whose primary customers were fleet buyers.
For the 1965 model year, Ford introduced an all-new design for its full-size model range. To further expand its flagship Galaxie 500 series, the 500 LTD was introduced. . Sharing top billing within the Galaxie series with the performance 500XL, the 500 LTD was designed as a luxury-oriented vehicle, offering many features of more expensive vehicles under the lower price of the Ford namep
Ford has used the 500 name on a number of cars, beginning with the 1957 Ford and continuing to the 2007 Ford Five Hundred: 1957–1959 Ford Fairlane 500 — upscale full-size car; 1961 Ford Fairlane 500 — nicer base-model full-size car; 1962–1964 Ford Galaxie 500 — upscale full-size car; 1962–1971 Ford Fairlane 500 — upscale mid-size car
Internally designated the D258 model, the Five Hundred was styled by George Bucher, Chief Designer, [1] [9] under the direction of Ford Vice President of Design, J Mays [10] who gave the Five Hundred its name, [4] recalling the "500" suffix Ford had used to designate a model's top trim level, as with the Galaxie "500".
The Custom series was dropped when Ford issued the next generation of full-size cars for 1973, meaning all Ranch Wagons were Custom 500s. The 1974 Ranch Wagon was the last available for sale to the general public. From 1975 to 1977, small quantities of Custom 500 station wagons (no longer called Ranch Wagon) were produced strictly for fleet buyers.
The Galaxie remained slotted as the mid-range full-size Ford into the 1970s between the Custom and the LTD (the XL was discontinued after 1970). After the 1974 model year, Ford dropped both the Galaxie and the Custom in favor of consolidating its full-size sedan line to the LTD (the Custom 500 remained in production for fleet sales).
The top-line spot for 1959 was the new Galaxie, positioned above the continued Fairlane 500. The Custom line was dropped, with Custom 300 the lowest rung on the ladder, and all 1959 Fords used the long 118 in (2997 mm) wheelbase. New for safety was fully padded armrests and rear door locks that were child proof. [13]
The Ranch Wagon returned to the station-wagon line, based upon the Custom. For 1967, the Ford Galaxie 500 XL was rebranded as the Ford XL (sportiest of the full-sized Ford line).
