The north and south niches are empty, however on the west side there is a Ganesha statue sitting on a yoni with a spout. Compared to other Hindu temples in Yogyakarta vicinity, Gebang temple has a unique architectural style; on the roof, small heads of divinity appear from a window frame and male divine bodies seated in the small niches.
All the Ganesha sculptures were made in Tamil Nadu, India, and each took five craftsmen a year to make. [5] A number of the sculptures include small motifs of modernity, [citation needed] such as a small pint of Guinness beside a Ganesha. [citation needed] One of the bronzes is a "copy" of a Gandhara-era sculpture. [9]
The temple has a small mandap with the shrine for Siddhi Vinayak ("Ganesha who grants your wish"). The wooden doors to the sanctum are carved with images of the Ashtavinayak (the eight manifestations of Ganesha in Maharashtra). The inner roof of the sanctum is plated with gold, and the central statue is of Ganesha
Unlike common Central Java Hindu temples, the stone main structure and towering roof are absent. The main temple is modestly small in size and has simple decorations. [2] It only consists of several squares of walled stone base and staircases with the carving of Kala. The inner chambers contain statues of Ganesha, Nandi, and Lingam-Yoni.
A virtually identical statue has been dated between 973 and 1200 by Paul Martin-Dubost, [43] and another similar statue is dated 12th century by Pratapaditya Pal. [44] Ganesha has the head of an elephant and a big belly. This statue has four arms, which is common in depictions of Ganesha.
It stands today on the plot of land earmarked in Edwin L. Lutyens' plan for the Imperial Museum and was occupied by a small Museum of Central Asian Antiquities that housed the important collection of the explorer Sir Aurel Stein. [7] The National Museum building was planned to be built in phases to finally give it an octagonal shape.
