Inman Square likely owes its name to Ralph Inman (1713–1788), described as a gentleman of fortune and a Boston merchant. The details of his life can be pieced together from articles in the New England and Genealogical Register, vols. 12, 14, 25, 26, 30, 55, 84, 112, and 136, as well as numerous other sources.
The Dakota fire pit is an efficient, simple fire design that produces little to no smoke. [1] Two small holes are dug in the ground: one for the firewood and the other to provide a draft of air. Small twigs are packed into the fire hole and readily combustible material is set on top and lit.
The site consists of East Pit and most of the smaller West Pit (excluding a caravan park in the centre). [1] [2] East Pit is part of the Limekiln Close and East Pit Local Nature Reserve, [3] which is managed by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire under the name Cherry Hinton Chalk Pits. [4]
The front of Cherry Hinton Hall. Cherry Hinton lies about 3 miles (4.8 km) southeast of Cambridge city centre, and falls within the Cambridge City boundary but is geographically separated from it by the grounds of Cherry Hinton Hall, the airfield and the flooded chalk pits.
In 2015, a group was formed to restore the site called Friends of Jerry’s Pond along with Mass Audubon, Alewife Study Group, and Green Cambridge. [6] [7] The group also works with young people of the area alongside the city's mayor's employment program. [4] The group hosts an annual cleanup day known as Jerry's PondFest. [8]
The site has been designated a Local Nature Reserve by Cambridge City Council, which shows it as one LNR [1] and West Pit as a separate LNR. [5] However, the LNRs are confusingly shown on the Natural England website. One is shown as Limekiln Close and West Pit on the details page, [6] but the map only covers Limekiln Close. [7]
