Having seen enough of the fight, Vegeta orders Nappa to stop and let him fight Goku. To have some more fun, Nappa decides to attack Gohan and Krillin, only to be stopped by Goku's Kaio-ken attack. Unable to move, Nappa asks Vegeta for help, but the cruel prince does not tolerate weakness. Vegeta kills Nappa with a sadistic display of power.
As Goku powers up in rage after learning they had killed his allies Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Chaozu, and Piccolo right before his arrival, Vegeta senses an explosive increase in his power level through his scouter device. When creating Vegeta, Toriyama originally intended for him to be a short-lived antagonist and second-tier character, with little influence to Dragon Ball's story. Toriyama intended for Goku to simply kill him at the climax of their first battle, and portrayed him as simply and one-dimensional as he should have been considering this.
