The 650B size, also known as 27.5″, reappeared in 2007 [6] as a compromise between the 26 inch and 29 inch sizes. The 650B size is called 27.5″. [7] The name "29er" comes from a bicycle called the Two Niner, which was offered by the Fisher bike company in 2001, according to 1998 Mountain Bike Hall of Fame inductee Don Cook. [8]
Small wheels may be welcome in indoor locations where large wheels are not. Small-wheel bicycles are adult bicycles that have wheels of 510 mm (20 in) nominal diameter or less, which is smaller than the 700c (522 mm), 660, 700, 740 mm (26, 27.5, 29 in) sizes common on most full-sized adult bikes.
A small wheel bicycle, such as a Moulton Bicycle, has a traditional seating position and small wheels. A portable bicycle, such as a Strida, is a folding bicycle that is small and light enough to be easily carried afoot or in a cramped vehicle. An exercise bicycle remains stationary; it is used for exercise rather than propulsion.
These rims are the same bead seat diameter as 700C wheels and are generally compatible with bicycle frames and tires designed for the 700C standard, however, rims designated as 29 inch are designed for wider tires than rims designated 700C, so frame clearance may be an issue. The formerly popular 27 inch (630 mm) wheel size is now rare.
