The Triffids formed in 1978 by mainstay David McComb, his school friend Alsy MacDonald together with Phil Kakulas. Their first release was a cassette tape, Triffids 1st recorded in May, by September they had added Byron Sinclair and released, Triffids 2nd with four more cassette tapes released by 1981.
The song was composed at Bowie's house located on Oakley Street, London, after Warren Peace (Geoff MacCormack) started playing chords on his piano. Bowie and Peace were inspired by Fats Domino and Little Richard , two rhythm and blues musicians they listened to during their childhood.
A native of Toowoomba, McDonald attended Toowoomba Grammar School and played his rugby for Past Grammars. He gained two caps for the Wallabies as a loose forward in the home 1938 Bledisloe Cup series against the All Blacks and was also on the 1939–40 tour of Britain that had to be abandoned two days after they arrived due to the war.
