Saffron Walden has a well-established hockey club, with its main pitch and clubhouse in Newport and a second pitch at Saffron Walden County High School. The club has eight men's teams, seven women's teams and a large junior section.
Sugar took up field hockey while attending Newport Free Grammar, starting at the age of 12. She played as a youth for Saffron Walden, Cambridgeshire and was selected for trials for the East of England squad. Chloe was a part of the team that came third in the Champions Trophy staged in Nottingham, the best ever performance of an England women's hockey team in this annual competition. Along with this came first ever women's hockey bronze medal for an England side at the World Cup in Rosario and another Commonwealth Games bronze in Delhi. [11]
